Strategic Roadmaps

ASRLab follows major European and international strategic research and innovation roadmaps to identify emerging challenges, technological priorities, and long-term research directions relevant to its activities.

These roadmaps provide important reference points for our work in autonomous systems, software engineering, verification and validation, trustworthy artificial intelligence, digital twins, reliability, safety, and dependable systems.

Electronic Components and Systems Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda

The Electronic Components and Systems (ECS) Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) defines research and innovation priorities for electronic components and systems in Europe.

The agenda addresses technologies ranging from micro- and nanoelectronics to embedded systems, cyber-physical systems, smart systems, and systems-of-systems. It also covers emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, photonics, quantum technologies, and advanced system integration.

A major focus of the roadmap is the development of systems that are reliable, safe, secure, and trustworthy.

Uğur Yayan contributed to the preparation of the Quality, Reliability, Safety and Cybersecurity subsection of the ECS SRIA 2021 and 2022 editions. These topics are closely aligned with ASRLab's research on dependable autonomous systems, verification and validation, and software quality.

NESSI Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda

The Networked European Software and Services Initiative (NESSI) focuses on the future of software, services, data, and digital infrastructures.

Its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda highlights the need for digital systems that are increasingly distributed, intelligent, trustworthy, sustainable, and data-driven.

The roadmap also emphasises the central role of software as a key enabling technology across industrial and societal digital transformation.

These priorities are particularly relevant to ASRLab's research in software engineering, AI-assisted software testing, intelligent systems, dependable software, and digital engineering.

Systems Engineering Vision 2035

The Systems Engineering Vision 2035, developed by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), presents a long-term perspective on the evolution of systems engineering.

The vision addresses major trends shaping future engineering practice, including:

  • Digital transformation
  • Model-based engineering
  • Artificial intelligence and smart systems
  • Increasing system complexity
  • Modelling and simulation
  • Advanced visualisation
  • Sustainability
  • Human-system integration

These directions closely relate to ASRLab's research in Digital Twins, autonomous systems, model-based engineering, simulation, verification and validation, and system dependability.

From Strategy to Research

ASRLab uses strategic roadmaps as reference points for understanding future technological needs and positioning its research within broader European and international research priorities.

Our current research activities particularly intersect with strategic priorities in:

  • Autonomous and cyber-physical systems
  • Verification and validation
  • Software quality and testing
  • Digital Twins and model-based engineering
  • Trustworthy and AI-enabled systems
  • Reliability, safety, and dependability

These strategic perspectives help guide the development of new research topics, collaborative projects, software tools, datasets, and experimental studies.
